Sixteen year old Vinuji lives in the village of Nakoi in Banaskantha District, Ahmedabad. He lives in a five member family that includes his parents, two siblings and himself.
Vinuji’s father is a farmer and his mother is a house wife. His two younger siblings are of school-going age. Vinuji was born blind. His father does not earn enough to support their basic needs and pay for the children’s education. While his two younger siblings go to school, Vinuji being visually impaired stayed home for many years. His parents being poor and uneducated, were not aware of any schools that catered to the needs of blind people.
At a neighbor’s suggestion, Vinuji’s parents inquired about the Blind School, run by Blind People’s Association (BPA) at Vastrapur, Ahmedabad. Convinced that the school would be able to cater to his special needs, they got Vinuji enrolled and he is currently studying the Braille foundation Course, here.
Not having gone to school earlier, everything was new to him and he was quite apprehensive about learning braille, without a braille kit of his own. He could not practice or revise his lessons after class and was finding it very difficult to remember his notes. He soon realized, he too, would need a braille kit, like all other students there, to be able to perform well. He felt guilty about burdening his parents with one more additional expense and inquired about sponsorship opportunities.
He found out that his school provides disability aids to the needy with the help of donors and decided to apply for one. It’s your generous donation, Annette, that enabled BPA to provide him a braille kit, which he now uses to study after class.
He is now thoroughly enjoying his course and wants to join the Music school for the blind after completing his 12th grade. Music lover that he is, he dreams of becoming a music teacher someday.
Thank you, Annette, for this very thoughtful gift of a braille kit which has motivated Vinuji to study further!
